Contemporary Villa with Infinity Pool: Design Principles for the Ultimate Private Retreat

Contemporary pool villa architect Verona Italy — Federico Cappellina

he infinity pool has become the defining element of the contemporary luxury villa. But in the finest residential architecture, it is never simply a pool — it is an architectural statement, an extension of the living space, and a meditation on the relationship between human habitation and landscape.

At Federico Cappellina Architects, we have designed pool environments for luxury villas across Italy, Dubai, and Africa. Here is our approach.

The Infinity Pool as Architectural Element

The infinity edge is a visual disappearing act — water meeting sky or landscape at the horizon. But achieving this effect with architectural precision requires far more than engineering. The pool must be positioned precisely on the site to capture the right view. Its dimensions must be proportional to the house and the landscape. The coping, the liner colour, the surrounding stone — every detail contributes to the final effect.

In our Veneto projects, we often orient infinity pools toward the southern hills — the visual horizon is a continuous ridgeline of vineyards and cypress trees. In coastal projects, toward the sea. In each case, the pool extends the interior living room into the landscape.

Integration of Pool and Living Spaces: Indoor-Outdoor Flow

The finest contemporary villas treat the boundary between inside and outside as a threshold rather than a barrier. Full-height glazing that disappears into floor channels. Covered terraces with the same stone floor inside and outside. Pool water at the same level as the interior floor, creating the illusion of continuity.

We design the pool and the interior simultaneously — they are one spatial experience, not two separate elements. This integration is the key difference between a luxury villa and simply a nice house with a pool.

Technical Considerations: Hydraulics, Thermal, Safety

An infinity pool is technically complex. The balance tank — which receives the overflow water — must be sized correctly. The hydraulic system must respond instantly to changes in bather load and evaporation. In cold climates, pool heating is essential for a long season.

We work with specialist pool engineers from the earliest design stages, integrating technical requirements into the architectural design rather than accommodating them as afterthoughts. The pump room, the cover system, the lighting conduits — all resolved invisibly within the architecture.

Materials: Stone, Glass, Concrete in the Italian Tradition

For pool surrounds, we work primarily with natural stone — light limestone, pale travertine, or white marble for maximum heat reflection and visual warmth. The liner is almost always dark — deep anthracite or midnight blue — which creates the reflective quality that makes infinity pools so photogenic.

Glass tiles are used selectively for underwater walls where light penetration creates jewel-like colour. Concrete is used for pool structures — exposed where it can be beautiful, hidden where it cannot.

Our Favourite Pool Projects

The Stradivari villa features an extraordinary free-form pool that responds to the geometry of the surrounding landscape. The Rock House project in Zanzibar uses local stone and natural seawater exchange. Our Dubai projects integrate pool courtyards as the thermal and social heart of the home.
